Hoists are lifting and pulling devices that use some form of line to move or lift a load. A load is attached to a hoist by means of a lifting hook. Industrial hoists are primarily used for vertical lifting.
Industrial hoists can be divided into two main categories, powered and manual. Powered hoists include:
- Electric
- Pneumatic
- Hydraulic or fossil fuel
The manual category includes hand cranked, levered or ratcheted hoists that do not use power to function.
Hoists can be used to lift virtually any object from a small car engine to a NASA space shuttle component.
