The other day, I’m driving through my town when I notice brand new yellow pedestrian signs at every cross walk on the road I was traveling down. I started thinking to myself… when the heck did those get installed. I hadn’t noticed them before and had no idea how long they had been there. By the way, this is no indication of my road awareness when driving…LOL.
The next day, it occurred to me that the same thing may be going on at some of my customers’ warehouses. I wondered if the warehouse employees really do pay attention to all the signage at their facilities. Signage like “Caution: watch for forklift traffic”, “Stop, no pedestrians: fork trucks only,” etc. I can totally see that after working day after day at the same facility, these signs almost become mundane and eventually don’t get noticed at all.
iW.FieldSense advantage
The good news is now there is a product that Raymond has developed that specifically targets the safety of employees when interacting with forklift traffic. The product is called FieldSense and its goal is to enhance safety in facilities. Here is how it works:
- Vehicle-mounted Magnetic Field Generator (MFG) sends out magnetic pulses.
- Cab Silencer creates a silent zone in and around the vehicle cabin.
- Notification Module (NM) lights and sounds when a Pedestrian Notification Device (PND), another vehicle, or a protected structure enters the truck’s Notification Zone. Light and sound intensify when the Alert Zone is breached.
- Facility-mounted magnets allow the system to alert truck operators to the proximity of structural elements.
- Pedestrian Notification Device (PND) lights and sounds when a pedestrian enters a truck’s Notification Zone. Pedestrians MUST wear/carry a small, battery-powered Pedestrian Notification Device (PND) that provides audible and visual alerts.
It makes good sense
This technology is a great tool to add to any warehouse where warehouse traffic is prominent. Don’t get me wrong, all employees need to pay attention to all signage posted in the warehouse. It is there for their benefit. FieldSense adds that extra level of coverage for not only the pedestrian but the forklift operator as well. It’s like how we jump to attention when cruising down the highway when a state trooper’s siren goes off near us. Whether he’s pulling us over or just trying to pass, we are suddenly aware of our surroundings. That’s what FieldSense is all about. It doesn’t stop the vehicles or pedestrians- just makes them aware.
